K HOME Scheme:- In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance tourism infrastructure, the Kerala government has launched the K-HOME scheme, which aims to transform vacant houses into affordable and culturally immersive accommodations.

The pilot phase of this scheme will focus on areas within a 10-km radius of popular tourist hotspots such as Fort Kochi, Munnar, Kumarakom, and Kovalam.
K HOME Scheme Inspired by Global Models
The K-HOME scheme draws inspiration from successful international projects like Japan’s Minka Renovation Programme, which repurposes abandoned rural houses into modern lodgings while preserving their cultural heritage.
Similar models have been successfully implemented in France, Finland, and New Zealand, contributing to sustainable tourism and local economies.

This innovative approach is designed not only to expand Kerala’s hospitality sector but also to ensure the security and maintenance of vacant properties. By offering homeowners an opportunity to generate additional income, the scheme creates a win-win situation for both property owners and tourists seeking unique accommodations.
To kickstart the initiative, the Kerala government has earmarked an initial fund of Rs 5 crore for its implementation.
A Growing Opportunity in Kerala’s Tourism Sector
With over 22 million tourists visiting Kerala in 2023, the state continues to be a prime travel destination. Reports indicate that Kerala has approximately 1.5 million vacant houses, which, if utilized effectively, could significantly strengthen the state’s tourism infrastructure.
Expanding Tourism Beyond K-HOME
In addition to the K-HOME initiative, the government is taking bold steps to promote MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) by developing large convention centers and destination tourism hubs.
Furthermore, to support hotel construction projects, the Kerala Financial Corporation will introduce a special loan scheme offering up to Rs 50 crore. The government has also allocated Rs 7 crore for the 2025–26 edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, further reinforcing Kerala’s position as a cultural and artistic hub.
